4 to 1 Homebrew Balun Materials needed to construct the balun: (1) 6 inch long piece of 1 inch diameter PVC pipe (2) 4 feet lengths of Molex house wiring 12 gauge solid copper conductor (white & black) Instructions: Wrap 12 bifilar turns of the white and black wire around the PVC pipe form. Solder the top black wire to the bottom white wire. Solder the coax shield to the point where the top black wire and bottom white wire are soldered together.(an OPTIONAL ground wire may be soldered here also and ran to a nearby ground rod to put the balun at DC ground potential). Solder the coax center conductor and one side of ladder line to the bottom black wire that was left over after prior soldering instructions above. That way the coax is soldered across exactly 1/2 of the total coil length. Solder the other side of the ladder line to the top white wire that remains unused to put the ladder line across the entire wound coil length. I also sprayed 4 coats of Plasti-Dip spray on the finished balun to waterproof it. Will handle 1000 watts fine, but 10 gauge solid copper conductor is recommended for legal limit of 1500 watts.
